Bengals vs. Chiefs live updates: KC leads into 4th quarter

It’s rematch time in Kansas City, Joe Burrow and Cincinnati Tigers take on Patrick Mahomes and chiefs Play in the AFC Championship Game at Arrowhead Stadium for the second straight season.

Frank Clark ended the Tigers’ first drive by throwing Burrow 10 yards on the third to force a punt from Cincinnati.

I don’t know how big the impact is Travis Kelce Could have played Sunday because he suffered a back injury during Friday’s practice. That didn’t seem to bother him in Kansas City’s opening game, however, as he grabbed 16 yards on the Chiefs’ third play.

Kansas City challenged the game, but the field appeal was backed up. The Chiefs were able to score three points on offense, though, as Harrison Butek threw the ball on a 43-yard field goal on the next play.

The Tigers’ offensive line ran into trouble early on. After allowing a third down sack on the first down, the team gave up sacks in back-to-back games on the second down.

Willie Gay finished third and eighteenth in the penultimate moto. Then, Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones came up with a sack — his first in the playoffs — on the next play.

The Chiefs threw the ball down the field again on their second down of the game. When they entered Bengals territory, Kelce made another early game. But just after the catch, Kelce passed the ball to Jerick McKinnon to his left. The toss wasn’t clean, but McKinnon landed on it to ensure Kansas City retained possession.

A few plays later, Isiah Pacheco got into the touchdown zone, but the touchdown was wiped out due to a free throw. So the Chiefs hit another 3-pointer to give them a 6-0 lead at the start of the second quarter.

Party of four!

George Karlaftis joined the Chiefs in the sack fun, helping them get their fourth sack in the Tigers’ first three games.

Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst nearly scored a touchdown on third down. An incomplete pass by Burrow in the end zone forced Cincy to make a 3-pointer to make it 6-3.

MVS on the move

Marques Valdez-Scantling tracked a pass from Mahomes, who was running the other way, and caught the 29-yard catch that sent the Chiefs deep into Bengals territory.

The Chiefs opted to play at the four and short, and that decision paid off. After Mahomes scrambled for time, he found Kelce 1-on-1 in the end zone for his first touchdown of the game, leading 13-3 at halftime.

Burrow made a rare and costly mistake before a two-minute first-half warning when he underestimated his scheduled receiver under pressure. Jalen Watson was the beneficiary of the throw, as the seventh-round pick was intercepted for the second straight game, putting the Chiefs in Bengals territory.

Bengals get a boost

Trailing for the third time deep in their own territory, the Bengals looked like they were going to give the ball back to the Chiefs before halftime. To make matters worse, the Chiefs also seemed to be in good possession of the ball when Burrow’s pass to Hurst was intercepted. However, Chiefs safety Brian Cook hit Hurst before the ball reached, causing a pass interference.

Before halftime, Tee Higgins was a key player for the Bengals. After rushing for 5 and 11 yards, Higgins caught a pass on the sideline for a 21-yard gain that brought the Bengals to the Chiefs’ 5-yard line.

Cincinnati’s offense stalled there, but it was able to kick a field goal at halftime to give the game a 13-6 lead heading into the break.

The Bengals quarterback used his legs to give Cincy the lead on a three-and-six and deep into Chiefs territory.

The Bengals were able to force a three-pointer from the Chiefs to open the second half, and they took advantage. After Burrow’s first down scramble on the previous third down, the Bengals went on another big hunt and got it. Burrow threw a deep pass to Higgins, who caught a touchdown from a pair of Chiefs defenders at the goal line to tie the game at 13-13.

Valdez-Scantling made the steal before the first down mark on 3-and-7, and officials initially ruled him out of the win. However, after the Chiefs challenged the on-field ruling, Valdez-Scantlin reached forward and barely got the ball over the marker.

For the lead!

On another 3-point play, Mahomes found Valdez-Scantling in the middle again. This time, though, the receiver was in the end zone and caught a touchdown in traffic to give KC a 20-13 lead in the third quarter.

Mahomes made a lot of mistakes

The Chiefs’ star QB somehow let the ball slip from his hands while trying to cover a pass. Sam Hubbard jumped on it, passed the ball to center late in the third quarter, and trailed by seven.
