Business school and Australian university jointly launch sports management double degree program

Ohio University has newly launched a dual-degree program of Bachelor of Commerce in Sports Management from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia and a Bachelor of Sports Management from Ohio Business School.

The signing ceremony marks the official launch of the program, which will begin next fall. The ceremony was attended by Matthew Cacciato, who will be the program director, and Jim Strode, director of the business school’s undergraduate programme, as well as officials from Deakin University.

“We are delighted to bring this agreement to the finish line, as it has been a long time coming. We are very excited to provide our undergraduate students with additional opportunities in international sports,” Cacciato said.

The partnership offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for students interested in the business of sports. Deakin University has Australia’s leading sports management program and Melbourne is widely regarded as the country’s sporting capital. Ohio students participating in the double degree program will spend their sixth and seventh semesters at Deakin University.

Between terms, students will have the opportunity to work with the Australian Open, Australian Football League and various cricket teams. In turn, Deakin students will spend their third year in Ohio, using the Sports Management program’s deep network for summer placements.

“The College of Business is committed to experiential learning, and the launch of this program provides another meaningful opportunity for the Commercial Bobcats to study abroad in one of the best sports management programs in the world,” Strode said.

It was first conceived seven years ago by Norm O’Reilly, former chair of Ohio State’s sports management department, and David Shilbury, director of sports management at Deakin University. a cooperative relationship. The partnership was formally signed last summer by Ohio State President Hugh Sherman and Deakin University’s Faculty of Business and Law Executive Dean Mike Ewing.

“It’s exciting. It’s been a long time coming,” Strode said. “Their faculty are absolutely amazing.”

Ohio University and Deakin University first formally partnered in 2019 when Ohio State partnered with Deakin University for a sports sponsorship workshop and field trip.

In addition to the two universities hosting some of the most respected sports business programs in their respective countries, the partnership makes practical sense thanks to Ohio State’s relationship with AECOM, an American multinational infrastructure consulting firm with Ohio State’s sports management The project has a long standing relationship and has an office in Melbourne.

Strode hopes overseas students in Ohio will enter into a partnership with Deakin University because Australia is a predominantly English-speaking country, which makes international education more accessible to native English speakers.

Ohio students participating in the program will pay only Ohio State tuition and no additional fees other than room and board. Students interested in enrolling can apply for scholarships from AECOM, which recently announced scholarships for Ohio students studying at Deakin University. Strode is also seeking funding for additional scholarships for individuals in the dual degree program.

Established in 1974, Deakin University bills itself as Australia’s most advanced university. It has approximately 65,000 enrolled students, including 16,000 international students from 130 countries.
