Des Moines police were at the scene Monday to respond to a shooting that left two students dead and an employee wounded. The shooting was reported around 12:53 p.m. on Starts Right Here, a nonprofit focused on helping at-risk youth. Starts Right Here was created by activist and rapper Will Keeps. The Outreach Center is located at 455 Southwest 5th St. Starts Right Here and has been a Des Moines Public Schools partner since 2021. They serve 40-50 DMPS students at a time. No DMPS personnel were present at the time of the shooting. According to police, three people were shot. Two students were taken to hospital with serious injuries. They are dead. A third individual, a Starts Right Here employee, was taken to hospital in a serious condition. They have undergone surgery. It was not immediately clear how old the student was. About 20 minutes after the shooting, the three suspects were taken into custody after a traffic stop, police said. Two suspects remained in the vehicle while a third fled on foot and was arrested. Police said they took all suspects into custody. Police have not yet released the identity of the suspect. The DMPD is expected to issue an update on the shooting at 9 p.m. Monday. Kim Reynolds released the following statement after the shooting: “I am shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting at Starts Right Here. I have seen firsthand how Will Keeps and his staff are working hard to help at-risk My heart breaks for them, these children and their families. Kevin and I are praying for their safe recovery.” Des Moines Public Schools issued the following statement after the shooting: “We are saddened to Another incident of gun violence is known, especially one affecting organizations that some of our students work closely with. We are still waiting to learn more details, but our hearts go out to all the victims of this incident, as well as their families and friends .. My hearts go out to them, these children and their families Heartbroken. Kevin and I are praying for their safe recovery.”
