Downtown business gets ready for MLS fans

British stone. LOUIS (KMOV) – Downtown St. Louis businesses expect how game day at CITYPARK will affect them.

Irish pub Maggie O’Brien’s had a grand re-opening just days before the first game in the new stadium. The company has a bright green paint job on the outside and a brand new interior.

“There’s not a single person I didn’t pass that didn’t say, ‘Oh, I bet you’re happy with that football stadium,'” owner Eddie McVey told News4. He said they were happy, but this part of downtown St. Louis had been home for 43 years.

“Some people like to tell me I’m lucky,” he said. “I don’t think I am, and the reason I say that is we’ve been here for a long time, we’re not going anywhere, whether they build it or not, we’ve stuck around a lot or people haven’t.”

The renaissance of this section of downtown is due in part to the extensive redevelopment of Union Station. Union Station said they believe football fans will bring a whole new crowd to the attraction. In the spring, a football-themed restaurant will open at the Coroner’s on the west side of Union Station.

On the north side of the stadium is the Schlafly Brewery. They will be brewing non-alcoholic beers for game day.

During the regular season, CITYPARK will hold approximately 20 regular season games. The team said the venue will be used to host various other events, games, festivals and more, providing a huge boost to businesses throughout the year.
