How One Nonprofit Helps Southern Businesses in San Antonio

The Southside First Economic Development Council is working to connect businesses with available programs in the city and county.

SAN ANTONIO – The Southside First Economic Development Council wants to grow San Antonio’s business south of the city, and they have a number of partners working hard to make it happen.

The non-profit organization is located in San Antonio 2130 SW Military Dr Suite 202, and its regular hours of operation are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

However, on Saturday, they hosted the Southside Expo in partnership with City Office, City Representatives, Bexar County Clerk Office, CPS Energy, Workforce Solutions, and other organizations and businesses.

“It’s kind of a one-stop shop. You can come and talk to us and we’ll try to steer you in the right direction,” said Gabriela Cadena, chief executive of Southside First.

The packed event was designed to provide resources for business owners and local residents, who are often unable to leave work during the week.

Southside First has partnered with the city, county, UTSA, and private companies to help businesses find out how to get a loan, learn how to evaluate a loan, find a location, and more. They are already working to help businesses get funding from the American Rescue Package Act and talking to business advisers.

The Southside First Economic Development Council also currently has online presentations on tax breaks, building permits, government contracts, bank relations and many other topics.

Cadena told KENS 5 that they are also working with businesses in other parts of the city to expand to the Southside.

“If you want to expand, you have another business in the west or east or north, and you want to have a second or third location then come to us,” Cadena said.
