The Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) will provide plan reviews and inspections for Panasonic’s $4 billion electric vehicle battery plant in DeSoto, Kansas.

The Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) will provide plan review and inspection services on behalf of the city of DeSoto, Kansas, during construction of a $4 billion Panasonic electric vehicle battery (EV) mega-factory.

The Institute for Building Technology and Safety (IBTS) will provide plan review and inspection services during construction of Panasonic’s $4 billion electric vehicle battery (EV) plant on behalf of the City of DeSoto, Kansas.

Through a competitive procurement process, the city selected a national nonprofit to provide plan reviews and site inspections for the 5.5 million square meter park. foot. facility.

Groundbreaking took place in November and battery production is expected to begin in March 2025. Construction of this fast-paced project will be overseen by IBTS’ Local Government Solutions team, who will be on site full-time to ensure the structure meets code requirements.

When completed, the plant will produce lithium-ion batteries for automakers to meet the country’s growing demand for batteries for electric vehicles. The plant is expected to create thousands of new jobs and provide a major economic development boon for Kansas and the electric vehicle market.

DeSoto is a small city in the Kansas City metropolitan area with a population of approximately 6,000 people. While the Panasonic plant presents great opportunity for the region, the project also presents challenges for New York City to meet a corresponding surge in building code enforcement.

To meet this need, the City of New York selected IBTS to provide third-party building sector services through its experienced professionals certified by the International Code Council (ICC). The Kansas City branch of IBTS has provided these and other services to local governments in the area for more than 10 years.

Mike BrengartPE, De Soto City Administrator says:

During the selection process, it became apparent that IBTS had the expertise, experience and capabilities to ensure that the Panasonic facility met New York City’s requirements for worker and community safety.

“We are grateful to IBTS for not only helping the City of New York with this important and complex project, but for its commitment to our community and its future.”

Curt SkogHead of Local Government Services Development at IBTS said:

IBTS is proud to support the City of DeSoto by providing on-time service to ensure the safety of the facility.

“We are excited about the opportunity to be a part of the historic return of the Advanced Manufacturing Facility to the United States and the breadth of opportunities it provides to our communities,”
