Kalamazoo bike shop to close after 15 years

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — After 15 years serving the Kalamazoo area, Zoo City Cycle & Sport announced Tuesday that it will be closing permanently.

The store is located at 4308 S. Westnedge Ave. Just north of the I-94 interchange, the announcement was made on its website and social media accounts.

“After 15 years of unspeakable good times, it’s time to wind down the business,” owner Rick Lee said in part of the statement. “This decision was not taken lightly or due to any one thing, but the result of many factors. One thing is very certain. Now is not the time to be sad, quite the opposite.

“Having spent most of my life in the cycling and sporting goods industry in my hometown, it’s something I’ll never forget or be humbled by. I have to do what I love in a place I love, surrounded by me Beloveds, this is the dream you have fulfilled for me. Words cannot describe what it feels like to just write it down. Thank you so much everyone.”

Until closing, the store will remain open at current hours, 11am-7pm Tuesday-Friday and 9am-5pm Saturday.

Lee told MLive/Kalamazoo Gazette that there is no clear timeline for store closures and will do so once all stock is sold out. At present, all products in the store have been reduced by at least 10%. All sales thereafter will be final.

Eventually, the building’s fixtures and the building itself will also be sold, Lee said.

Those with a one-year warranty on their bikes with gear and brake adjustments will be able to get those adjustments done at Kzoo Swift at 1305 S. Westnedge Ave. With immediate effect, Zoo City will no longer offer bicycle service.
