Man dies after dog stepped on rifle, Kansas officials say

A man died in Kansas on Saturday after officials believed he was hit with a rifle that was fired after being stepped on by a dog.

Wellington Fire and Emergency Medical Chief Tim Hay told NBC News that the shooting occurred around 9:40 a.m. on a truck in the 1600 block of East 80th Street, about 46 miles south of Wichita. . The dog stepped on the rifle in the back of the truck, causing it to fire and hit the man who was found in the front passenger seat in the back, he said.

Emergency medical personnel performed CPR on the 30-year-old victim, who has not been named, before he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Hay.

The other person in the driver’s seat was not injured, he said.

It’s unclear who owns the truck and dog, or who called 911.

The investigation is still ongoing, but officials said it appeared to be a hunting-related accident, according to the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office, adding that hunting gear was also found in the back of the vehicle.
