Nine people have died so far, according to Russian state news agency TASS. Among the dead were school security personnel, according to the head of the regional government, Alexander Brechalovn.
It is unclear if the attacker is still alive. Brechalovn said the attacker shot himself, but did not say whether he survived.
The shooting took place at the 88th school in Izhevsk, the capital of Russia’s Udmurt region. It has been evacuated, Brechalovn said.
With a population of over 600,000, Izhevsk is one of the 20 most populous cities in Russia. It was founded in 1760 as a steel mill settlement and is still a well-known industrial center today.
The city is perhaps best known as the home of the AK-47 rifle and the long-term residence of Soviet Lieutenant General Mikhail Kalashnikov.
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, composer of the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, was born in the Udmurt region.
