Schuylkill County businesses hold giveaway meals

Palermo’s gives back to the community one free meal at a time.

MINERSVILLE, PA — The line outside Palermo Pizza & Restaurant near Minersville is not for a table but for a free meal.

They are one of the restaurants suitable for meal donations at the Big Diamond race track. Give back to those in your community who may be struggling with food insecurity.

“I think it’s good, I think everybody’s hurt by the economy and inflation, I think it’s a really nice gesture,” explained Jodie Hertz of Schuylkill Haven.

Owners Jake and Jasmine Smulley wanted to support their neighbors in Schuylkill County who may be battling rising inflation.

“The cost of living has gone up, but no one’s wages are really going up, everyone is struggling,” Hertz added.

With a generous donation from Big Diamond Speedway, Palermo’s was able to distribute 200 free meals.

“I’ll take two days off, I’ll eat for two days, so I don’t have to worry about, ‘Oh, what did I do today?'” said Deb Ebert of Pottsville.

Ebert shared how many of her friends in Schuylkill County are struggling to make ends meet.

“It’s hard, especially with a family. You know it’s not easy going from paycheck to paycheck. That’s me; I pay paycheck,” Albert added.

Said she was happy to be home with the bag, for her and her neighbors in need.

“It’s great that they did this; I’m grateful for it all,” she said.
