The slow start has been a problem in the Seahawks’ recent losses, including last week’s game in Kansas City, where the Seahawks conceded just one field goal in their first five games and then made a field goal at halftime. Against the 49ers a week ago, the Seahawks won on four possessions before allowing another shot late in the second quarter.
The Seahawks faced a tough defense again on Sunday, with the Jets ranking third in total defense and fourth in scoring defense, but that didn’t stop Seattle from taking an early lead and taking control of the game. Kenneth Walker III ran for 60 yards on the first scrimmage of the game before Smith found Parkinson for the score.
They added a field goal after a Quandre Diggs interception allowed the Seahawks to return the ball in good field position, and then on their next drive, they rushed for 70 yards in seven plays on Smith to Horses. Bree’s touchdown pass led 17-3.
The Jets’ talented defense did challenge the Seahawks at times, but that quick start set the tone and set the stage for the defense to take over the game.
In what might have been the best news of the day for Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, the Seahawks were turnover-free for their first turnover-free game of the season.
