Rep. shooting at Shirley property in New York. The congressman and Republican gubernatorial candidate said in a statement that Lizeldin injured two people on Sunday. Zeldin’s family is safe and sound.

“My 16-year-old daughters, Mikayla and Arianna, were doing their homework at our house, and my wife, Diana, and I were in the car just leaving the Bronx Columbus Day Parade in Morris Park,” Zeldin said.

Zeldin said the two people who were shot had been lying under the home’s front porch and in the bushes in front of the porch.

“After my daughters heard the gunshots and screams, they ran upstairs, locked themselves in the bathroom and called 911 immediately. Every step of their movement was very quick and deft, Diana and I were there for them very proud.”

The circumstances of the shooting are unclear. But Suffolk County Police said the shooting had nothing to do with the Zelding family. Two people injured in the incident have been taken to the area hospital for treatment, a police spokesman said.

Zeldin said police investigators came to his home and provided security footage from cameras in the home. He said he did not know the identities of the two men.

“My daughters are shaken, but okay,” he said. “Like many New Yorkers, crime has entered our front doors. My family is grateful to everyone who reached out and we will provide another update when possible.”

Zeldin has made criticism of rising crime a central theme of his gubernatorial campaign against the incumbent Democratic governor. Kathy Hocher. He was attacked by a man armed with a sharp object during his election campaign in July.
