Maite brings more than a decade of experience and a deep understanding of The Washington Post and its audience to this important role. Maite will work closely with Erika Allen and the Audience Strategy and Growth team to leverage all available disciplines – including strategies for reaching new readers, building loyalty and leveraging social and search – to identify strategies that put readers at the center of our work and deliver Help guide decisions about what and how to cover.
Maite, currently working abroad as a breaking news reporter as part of the Newsroom Opportunity Year, joined The Washington Post in 2018 as an operations editor for the foreign affairs and national security teams, optimizing stories for search, analyzing traffic data and leading Digital Best Practices Training. She was promoted to Senior Operations Editor in April 2021, in this role she played a key role in field reporting strategy, with Angela Merkel announcing her retirement for the first German election and Prince Philip’s funeral cooperation in the UK.
Before joining Post, Maite worked at CQ Roll Call, responsible for audience engagement strategy. Previously, she worked at the International Center for Journalists as Director of Communications and Editor-in-Chief for IJNet.org, a website for journalists published in seven languages. She started her career as a general assignment reporter for the El Observador national newspaper in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Maite is a Uruguayan who earned a BA in Journalism from ORT University and an MA in Multimedia Journalism from the University of Maryland. In 2020, she was selected for the “Women’s Leadership Accelerator,” a one-year mentoring program run by the Online Journalism Association. She lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with her husband, Justin, their two children, and the family dog, Uzi. Maite is a native Spanish speaker, loves to run, and enjoys cooking in her spare time.
