Treasury to start taking ‘extraordinary measures’ as parties balk at debt ceiling

Still, we’ll be watching how members of Congress react — especially Republicans who have pledged not to vote to raise the debt ceiling unless Democrats agree to back down.

The White House said it would not agree to any preconditions for lifting restrictions, but senators. Joe Manchin III (DW.Va.) defied party lines on Fox Business on Wednesday, voicing support for tying the debt ceiling to creating a commission to review how to support Social Security and other programs.

Meanwhile, a Republican, Rep. Andy Biggs (Arizona) said Tuesday that he does not support raising the debt ceiling at all. Will other Republicans follow his lead?
